I was raised in a conservative home, let me tell you that it takes years to find these things- because they're deep in there. You have racist programming embedded so deeply in your mind that you don't know it's there until it runs and you catch it. But every single one you work to catch and undo is one less that will haunt you and every single one gone makes you just a little better. I'm not perfect, the home I was raised in was bad. It's taken me years to work out of this, to find this and undo it. You're not going to decide to not be racist and it be done, because you still have that underlying education that will hinder your thoughts. In order to change this you have to take a deep breath and acknowledge you have had bad information growing up and you have to begin questioning your thoughts and predispositions. You can all do it, you can fight against this by rooting it out of yourself first, then helping others.

This is a really good book, especially interesting is the process Derek went through; it wasn't an overnight transformation.
